AJAC reveals Canadian car and truck of the year for 2000

The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) selected the Ford Focus as Canadian Car of the Year for 2000. In addition, the Nissan Xterra was acknowledged as the Canadian Truck of the Year, the Audi TT Quattro Coupe was declared the Best New Design for 2000, and GM's Night Vision was named Best New Technology. They were selected from an initial field of 62 new-for-2000 vehicles entered in AJAC's Annual Car of the Year competition. Here's a summary of the category winners.

Economy Car: Winner -- Ford Focus LX; finalists -- Hyundai Elantra, Chrysler Neon (base model).

Family Sedan (Under $25,000): Winner -- Ford Focus ZTS; finalists -- Volkswagen Golf, Saturn LS1.

Family Sedan (Over $25,000): Winner -- Nissan Maxima GXE; Finalists -- Subaru Legacy L, Chevrolet Impala.

Station Wagon: Winner -- Saturn LW2; Finalists -- Ford Focus Wagon SE, Subaru Legacy GT, Subaru Legacy L Wagon.

Sport Sedan: Winner -- Nissan Maxima SE; Finalists -- BMW M5, Mercedes-Benz E55.

Sport Utility Vehicle: Winner -- Nissan Xterra (also named Truck of the Year); Finalists -- Subaru Outback Limited, BMW X5.

Luxury: Winner -- Infiniti I30; Finalists -- Buick LeSabre Limited, Lincoln LS-V8.

Luxury Coupe/Convertible: Winner -- BMW 328 Ci; Finalists -- Saab Viggen 9-3, Mercedes-Benz CLK320 Cabriolet.

Prestige: Winner -- Audi A6 4.2; Finalist -- Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

Sports Car: Winner -- Audi TT Quattro Coupe; Finalists -- Honda S2000, Porsche Boxster S.

Sports Coupe: Tie winners -- Honda Civic SiR, Ford Focus ZX3; Finalists -- Volkswagen Beetle 1.8, BMW 323Ci.
