2008 fuel-efficiency rebates

Saving money with rebates on fuel-efficient models

Even though the Canadian government's ecoAuto rebate program was cancelled in the Spring 2008 federal budget, it remains valid for qualifying vehicles purchased until end of December 2008. That means you can get a tax rebate -- commonly called the federal 'feebate' -- on several hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles, including cars and pickup trucks.

In addition, individual provinces offer tax rebates for various hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles.

Ontario will give back 8% for such models and their conversion costs -- up to $750 for propane vehicles and up to $2,000 for hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) purchased before April 1, 2012. See details here.

The province of P.E.I. also offers a provincial sales tax rebate of up to $3,000 on hybrid vehicles. See details here.

Manitobans who purchase a hybrid-electric vehicle can get a $2,000 rebate until Nov. 15, 2008. For more information, see this link.

In Quebec, new hybrid vehicles may be entitled to a rebate of the Quebec sales tax paid, up to the end of this year. See details here.

Likewise, in B.C., qualifying new flex fuel-, gasoline- or diesel-powered fuel-efficient vehicles can receive a PST reduction. To qualify, light trucks must have a Combined Fuel Consumption Rating (CFCR) of 8.3 litres per 100 km or less. B.C.'s program expires March 31, 2011. See details here.
