Newly refreshed Mustang could be best ever made

Consumer Reports magazine thinks the refreshed 2010 Mustang is the best ever, especially when compared to other muscle cars such as the all-new 2010 Chevrolet Camero or the Dodge Challenger. Here's what Tom Mutchler of the magazine had to say about the new Mustang GT.

"Let's face it - before we bought our muscle car test group, I don't think any of us would have expected the 2010 Ford Mustang GT to outscore the brand-new Chevrolet Camaro SS. The numbers game put the Mustang pretty far behind: 426 horsepower in the Camaro vs. 315 in the Mustang GT. Plus, the Camaro is a new contemporary design, loosely based on the very impressive-to-drive Pontiac G8 sedan.

"By contrast, the 2010 Mustang is merely a freshening of the likable, but not stellar, introduced-in-2005 version. Heck, it even has an old-school live axle in the rear. (Horrors!)

"But then we bought our test Mustang. Smiles and fond comments in the logbook soon followed.

"Another pair of numbers proves telling: 3,650 vs. 3,900 - the curb weights of the Mustang and Camaro, respectively. The Mustang feels a lot lighter on its feet, more willing to respond to the driver. That weight difference also helps make up for the horsepower deficit: a 0-60 mph time of 5.7 seconds is far from shabby, and it is only 0.6 seconds slower than the Camaro.

"So you get performance, agility, and retro-esque styling. That's not unexpected in a sports car. But the Mustang also manages to be a comfortable daily driver. It has a relatively civilized ride, and the biggest noise source is its V8 burble through the dual exhaust, which is irresistible. The upright greenhouse provides decent visibility and access--a Camaro shortcoming."
