Here's some insider information

By Bill Roebuck, Editor

Reader, please note that in reality, we're pretty small potatoes in the world of automotive websites (averaging 30,000 page views per month as of September 2011). We simply strive to provide honest and useful information. This site originally was built so I, personally, could find everything I needed to know every time I needed a new vehicle. If that's what you're looking for, you should find it here. If I've left out some useful resource or handy information, please let me know.

Look at our Contents page -- links to all the key research you need can be found here. I decided to share that information with as many people as I could through this site.

It's true we don't have a review or report on every single new vehicle, but we do the best we can. And you are guaranteed we won't spoof users by promising reviews we don't have available, like many of the big, professional sites that pretend to have a review of anything you type in Google Search ... but when you get to the site, it's just a headline with no data. We'll never fake you out like that, and that's a promise.

So use the information here to your best advantage. It's all honest, it's all written by great writers, it's all edited by a professional editor, and it's all offered with the best of intentions. It would help us help you if you tell your friends about us -- more traffic is always a good thing in the web world, as I'm sure you know. And as you might expect, we're always open to suggestions; comments, criticisms, ideas for stories or whatever can be sent to: editor (at)

Would you like to support this site with a small donation?

CarTest! does not sell anything, and the information here is offered freely to everyone. The upkeep of this site is a time-consuming proposition, so if you've found it helpful in your automotive research, and care to support its ongoing existence, you can make a modest donation towards its upkeep. This can be accomplished quickly and easily using the following secure PayPal link. A buck or two or five will go further than you can imagine!

Are we influenced by advertising on our site?

Absolutely not, and here's why. All ads are placed by a third party, Google Adsense, and in fact, we never know which ads will appear until we visit CarTest! ourselves to see what's showing up. (We've banned scams and offensive ad content because we never want to see that type of content here.) This type of arm's-length advertising, where we do not have direct influence over it, helps to ensure our independence, yet brings in a minor amount of income to support some of the expenses of running this site and helps keep it free. Please know that in no way would an advertisement here influence what we have to say about a vehicle in a review.

What:©TM is a Canadian website developed to provide unbiased, informative reviews of hands-on test drives of new cars and light trucks. We do our best to let readers appreciate what it's like to experience of each vehicle without having to sit in the driver's seat themselves.

Where: CarTest!TM is edited in Canada from a Canadian perspective, yet has readers from all around the world.

When: The CarTest.caTM website was launched June 24, 2002.

Why: Our aim is to help you shorten your research time when you're considering the purchase or lease of a new vehicle by giving you feedback on our driving experiences. We also provide links to other websites we trust so you can expand the range of driving impressions you read.

How: Most of our test drives are a week long, using vehicles provided by the manufacturers. Our tests incorporate a variety of road conditions, from smooth highways to potholed and patched pavement, from bumpy city streets to dirt roads down to the horse barn. If we're lucky we get to report on driving in both wet and dry conditions.

Despite the fact that vehicles are provided to us by the manufacturers (the cost of purchasing or renting vehicles for private testing is clearly prohibitive for a small site like this), we endeavour to maintain an independent perspective on the vehicles. Our goal is to tell you what the drive is like for us, and what it will be like for you. We'll point out the great features and the lousy ones. If there's bad design, we'll be sure to mention it. We know that if we lead you astray, you won't come back to visit, so we just won't do that.

When we have knowledge of reputable information from other sources on reliability and safety ratings, we'll tell you where to find it.

Many of our reports include data from  the world's toughest, most comprehensive, independent testing event, AJAC's annual TestFest of new vehicles, held each fall in Canada. As voting members, the association gives us ready access to its extensive instrumented test data. You can read details about the test methods and procedures at, the website of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada.

The fact that we are members of AJAC also means we have a Code of Ethics to uphold. That can also be found on the AJAC website for your reivew.

Note that we always recommend that before buying a vehicle, you read comments from several automotive journalists -- not just ours -- to be sure to get a balanced viewpoint about a vehicle. Also check other available resources, such as Consumer Reports, Phil Edmonston's LemonAide guide, and check for safety and reliability data on the Internet (see the list and links to a wide range of other helpful online resources under How to Find the Best Vehicle).

We welcome all comments and suggestions on our reviews and on this website, and are very glad you've taken the time to stop by. Please bookmark us for future reference, and don't hesitate to stop by anytime you feel like experiencing 'a drive from the seat of your computer'.
